Case Study
Modernising Server Infrastructure for a Yorkshire Manufacturer

Audio overview:
The Challenge
A large Yorkshire manufacturer with 90 employees had been a Cactus IT support customer for several years when they faced an unavoidable situation: their Windows Server infrastructure was approaching end of life. The ageing operating system would soon stop receiving security updates, creating both compliance risks and operational vulnerabilities. But replacement wasn’t simply a matter of swapping old servers for new ones. The manufacturer relied on several critical line-of-business applications running on their internal servers. These applications were essential for maintaining production schedules and meeting customer deadlines. While their email had previously been migrated to Microsoft 365, their core business systems remained on-premise, and downtime simply wasn’t an option. They needed a solution that delivered excellent value without compromising on the high availability their production environment demanded.
Designing the Solution
Rather than simply replacing like-for-like, we saw an opportunity to modernise their entire infrastructure while actually improving resilience and value.
Virtualisation with Microsoft Hyper-V
We identified Microsoft Hyper-V as the ideal platform for their needs. By virtualising their server environment, we could make far better use of modern hardware resources rather than leaving capacity unused on multiple physical servers. Hyper-V integrated seamlessly with their existing Windows environment, minimising complexity while maximising efficiency. The platform would allow them to run multiple virtual machines on consolidated hardware, delivering better performance and easier management than their previous physical server setup.
Coordinated Migration
The technical challenge wasn’t just building the new infrastructure – it was migrating their line-of-business applications without disrupting production. We coordinated closely with third-party application support providers, ensuring each system was properly configured and tested on its new virtual machine before going live. The rollout was carefully phased, with migrations scheduled around production demands to minimise any impact on operations.
Intelligent Backup and Replication
Rather than discarding the old server hardware, we identified an opportunity to repurpose it as part of an enhanced backup solution. We implemented a backup and replication system that created live copies of the production virtual machines on the recycled hardware. This wasn’t just traditional backup – it was near-instant recovery capability. If the primary infrastructure experienced problems, the manufacturer could switch to the replicated systems in minutes rather than hours. This delivered recovery point objectives (how much data might be lost) and recovery time objectives (how quickly systems could be restored) that were critical for a business where production delays mean missed deadlines and lost revenue.
The Results
The manufacturer now operates on a modern, supported server infrastructure with security updates guaranteed for years to come. Compliance concerns are resolved, and vulnerabilities from outdated systems are eliminated. The virtualised environment delivers better performance from less hardware. Resources are allocated efficiently across virtual machines, and the manufacturer has room to grow without immediately purchasing additional servers. The backup and replication solution provides peace of mind that was impossible with their previous infrastructure. In the event of hardware failure or system issues, recovery times are measured in minutes, not hours or days. Perhaps most importantly, the entire migration was completed without significant disruption to production. Through careful planning and phased implementation, the manufacturer maintained their delivery schedules throughout the project.
Why Infrastructure Planning Matters
This case study demonstrates that server replacements aren’t just about swapping old for new – they’re opportunities to fundamentally improve how technology supports your business. By taking time to understand production requirements, coordinate with application providers, and design solutions around business needs rather than just technical specifications, we delivered infrastructure that’s more capable, more resilient, and better value than simply replacing what existed before.
